Charla nº 81 del ciclo de conferencias "Coloquios en el CNA".

Será impartida por Dña. Serena Barone del Instituto Nacional de Física Nuclear (INFN) de Florencia y versará sobre: "14C and mortars.  Radiocarbon Dating is one of the most used techniques to date organic material. However, in some cases, it is impossible to find organic samples for the analysis. For this reason, the possibility of dating inorganic samples has been studied. In particular, starting from the late 1960s, the possibility of dating lime mortars has been investigated. Lime mortars are an artificial material, produced by men since ancient times. It is composed of two principal phases: the binder (CaCO3), which can transform from a liquid and plastic state to a solid, more resistant one, reacting with the atmospheric CO2; the aggregates, minerals of different nature, which have the the task of preventing the volumetric shrinking of the binder itself during the setting process. Regarding the radiocarbon dating, the fraction used is the binder. Althought mortar radiocarbon dating works in theory, lot of problems had showed up since the very beginning of the research. Most of these problems regards the presence of contaminations, that are not totally removed after the pre-treatment of the samples to be dated. The complexity of finding an effective pre-treatment for mortars, lies in the fact that this ind of material is very heterogeneous and its composition depends both on the historic period and on the place where mortars have been made. In this talk radiocarbon dating of historic mortars will be explained and two different type of pre-treatment will be illustrated. The study on the historic mortars of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence will be taken as an example of the problems that can come to light."
