Postdoctoral fellowship in experimental nuclear physics at GANIL (Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds) Caen, France

 Ref : UAR3266-VIRLEF-065

Dead line for applications: 15/10/2023

The Grand Accélérateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) calls for applications of young researcher post-doctoral fellows for a two years position, in the field of experimental nuclear physics, starting from November 2023. The successful candidate will be involved in the research activities related to the structure and production of superheavy nuclei using the Super Separator Spectrometer S3 and its detector SIRIUS (Spectroscopy and Identification of Rare isotopes Using S3).

Superheavy nuclei (SHN) owe their existence to their complex quantum mechanics configurations. The instrumentation required to study their synthesis and nuclear structure properties is the key for a successful exploration of the heaviest nuclear species. The Super Separator Spectrometer S3 at SPIRAL2 is designed to access isotopes with very low cross section and investigate their production mechanism and nuclear structure. The decay spectroscopy detector set-up SIRIUS will take advantage of the efficiency and mass resolution of S3 to study SHN.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity, within an international team, to contribute to the preparation and operation of the experimental setup involving the spectrometer S3 and its detector SIRIUS. She/He will take the responsibility of the tests of the detector SIRIUS and its installation on S3 . She or He is expected to develop and conduct a research program with these instruments. The successful applicant will also take an active part in the research program of the group as well as in its experimental activities at SPIRAL2 and in other facilities.

The applicant should have a PhD in experimental nuclear physics. She/He should be strongly motivated for both the fundamental physics and the associated instrumentation. She/He should have a solid experience in both the use and the development of data analysis tools.
