CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) announces the upcoming opening of a predoctoral position for outstanding young MSc graduates interested on working on gamma ray physics towards a PhD Thesis.

CIEMAT-FP participates in the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), an initiative to build the next generation ground-based very high energy gamma-ray instruments, and in the MAGIC project. Our group has been a key player in the construction and recent installation of the first 23 m diameter Large Size Telescope (LST) of CTA in the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos, in La Palma, and is involved in the deployment of the next three. In addition, our group is a member of the MAGIC collaboration, which has been operating two 17-m telescopes located at the same observatory for the last 15 years.

The main purpose of this project is to exploit the early data science of MAGIC and LST1 for the study of gamma-ray transient sources, as well as participating in the commissioning of the next LSTs. In addition, the candidate could participate in the development of new analysis methods and in the study of the scientific prospects of CTA. The candidate will also have an outstanding opportunity to be involved in the development of the stellar intensity interferometry technique with Cherenkov Telescopes, proven to be capable of imaging the stars with unprecedented resolution.

The 4-year PhD contract (Personal Investigador Predoctoral en Formación or Formación de Personal Investigador-FPI) is funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation through the “Programa Estatal de Promoción del Talento y su Empleabilidad en I+D+I” (FPI). This position is associated to the R+D project PID2019-104114RB-C31. The official call is available at http://www.ciencia.gob.es/portal/site/MICINN_predoc2020, the deadline for applications being the 27th October. It is also announced at http://cfp.ciemat.es/predoc.

The contract is expected to start on July 2021. The candidate must have a Master’s Degree in Astrophysics, Physics or similar by that moment. A good English knowledge and strong interest in blazars, high-energy phenomena or stellar physics. Experience in C++ and Python programming will be also valuable.
